THE QUICK ANSWER
What to settle first.
List every item that blocks the proposed work and assign one of four states: owner will move, provider will move, specialist decision needed or cannot safely move. Ask where contents will be placed, how damage is documented and whether inaccessible materials remain outside the assessment. Resolve the access plan in writing before the visit.
AT A GLANCE
Three points to clarify.
Movement authority
Identify who owns or controls each item and who has agreed to move it; do not assume the restoration provider accepts that task.
Temporary destination
Name a dry, permitted destination or record that no suitable location has been established.
Assessment consequence
Ask which floors, walls or built-ins cannot be checked while an item remains and how that limitation appears in the scope.
01 / PLAN THE CONVERSATION
Turn a broad exclusion into an item-level plan
The phrase furniture moving excluded does not explain whether it applies to a light chair, a full bookcase, a piano, a bed frame or wet boxed contents. Walk only through areas that are safe to enter and list the items that block access. Do not lift heavy or saturated belongings to complete the list.
For each item, record the room, ownership, observed condition and the path that would be needed to move it. Add building or household restrictions such as elevators, stairs, narrow doors, pets, occupied rooms or a prohibition on using an unaffected space for storage.
02 / PLAN THE CONVERSATION
Assign responsibility without inventing consent
Ask whether the provider moves any contents and, if so, which items, under what terms and with what documentation. If another mover, property manager or responsible household member must act, name that dependency. An unassigned task is not completed merely because it appears obvious.
For fragile, valuable, contaminated or unusually heavy items, record that a separate decision is required. Keep private inventories and identifying details in your own records. This page and the call planner do not collect or store them.

Connect access limits to the proposed assessment
Ask the assessor to state which surfaces can be reached with the current contents arrangement. A visible dry edge around a cabinet or bed does not establish the condition below or behind it. The scope should identify any important area that remains inaccessible and the next decision needed to reach it.
If contents must be moved after work starts, ask whether the task changes labor, handling, storage, equipment or timing charges. Require a written change process instead of relying on a promise to work it out later.
04 / PLAN THE CONVERSATION
Confirm the visit can accomplish its purpose
Before the appointment, read the access map back to the provider: items already moved, items they agreed to handle, items requiring another party and areas that will remain blocked. Ask what the crew needs on arrival and what would cause the visit to stop or narrow its scope.
Ask the responding provider to confirm availability, assessment charges and the written scope at your address. The provider must decide safe handling and assessment methods for the actual property; this worksheet only prevents an avoidable access misunderstanding.
YOUR DECISION WORKSHEET
Contents-access map
| Item or area | Movement owner | Assessment effect |
|---|---|---|
| Light movable item | Named household member or provider | Surface becomes accessible after agreed move |
| Heavy or built-in item | Provider, specialist or unresolved | Record the inaccessible edge and next decision |
| Wet or fragile contents | Handling decision required | Separate contents condition from building-material assessment |
| No dry destination | Property manager or household decision | Do not assume an unaffected storage area exists |
YOUR DISCUSSION CHECKLIST
Turn the conversation into clear answers.
Check an item once you have a recorded answer. These checks organize the conversation; they do not certify the design or work.

Your call notes
Questions to ask: List access-blocking items without moving unsafe loads. Name the person or business authorized to move each item. Identify a permitted temporary destination. Please confirm whether you handle the water removal and drying needs I describe and serve my address, plus any assessment fees and exclusions.
Common questions
Should I move furniture before the provider arrives?
Only when it is safe and appropriate for you to do so. Ask the provider what access is needed and who should handle heavy, wet, fragile or contaminated items.
Does an exclusion mean the provider will not document contents?
The exact meaning belongs in the written scope. Ask what condition records, protection or handling documentation are included even when movement is excluded.
Can blocked access change the quote?
It can change what can be assessed or performed. Ask the provider to state the limitation and the written process for any later work or charge.
